"While not totally responsible for the kinds of budgetary shenanigans described by the authors, there is nevertheless a great conundrum in conservative governance that I wish the authors would have addressed more directly. Modern conservatism was an ideology born in a politically inferior position to liberalism. It’s strengths have always been in the logical way it is dismantled the intellectual underpinnings of the welfare state. I really see no point in the theory that anti-intellectualism and the cocky 'make-it-up-as you-go-along' ploy will ever replace original thought and an honest effort in recognizing that common people are not the blame for indifference and overextension.
The welfare state as the great goblin seems to be the only fall back excuse left for all the conservative failures. bob natz
